Physical Education

In the Health & Physical Education Department we strive to inspire students to live healthy, active lives. Our courses are designed for students of various abilities. We want students to develop a holistic understanding of health and wellness that will benefit them during their adolescence and beyond. Students interested in health-related post-secondary and career options can build their knowledge and experience through our range of courses.

 

Field Trips:

Our department regularly participates in off-site recreational activities. These opportunities are available to students in all grades.

"Healthy Active Living" Courses:

This Open-level, non-gender specific course is offered in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.

This course equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices now, and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities, students develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively.

"Personal and Fitness Activities" Courses:

This Open-level course is offered in grade 10, as a gender-specific class.

It is offered in grades 11 and 12, as a non-gender specific course.

This course enables students to further develop the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices now and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities, students develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively. This course will focus on activities to promote lifelong physical and mental wellness in a fitness centre atmosphere. Students will learn to develop and revise personal fitness plans to suit their own needs, as well as assess and monitor their health-related fitness during physical activity. The development of these skills will start students on a path to achieving their personal wellness goals, both now and in the future.

Hockey Focused - Health Living and Large Group Activities Course:

This Open-level, non-gender specific course is offered in grade 11.

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills, game rules, ways to improve personal fitness, and safety/injury prevention. In four health units, students will investigate issues related to healthy eating, personal safety and injury prevention, substance use, addictions and related behaviours, and human development and sexual health. Students will also participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills. The hockey skills program is co-educational and will be open to beginning players and advanced players. The program is intended for student-athletes who want to improve their fitness levels and playing abilities through skills-specific training. The students will be exposed to important developmental skills of the game along with gaining valuable experiences in the areas of leadership, self-esteem, character development, nutrition, and fitness. This course has a fee of $160 to cover the following three items: 3 skates/week, jersey, socks, and a practice ball.

"Aquatics Leadership" Two-Credit Course:

This non-gender specific program is offered as a grade 11 open-level or grade 12 university-level course.

Aquatics leadership course is two-credit course which trains, certifies and supports student leadership in the aquatic industry. This course is offered in semester two, in partnership with the Canadian Forces Base Borden and Township of Essa. Students will earn two high school credits (IDC3O or IDC4U and PPZ3C1), certification in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, CPR level C, and National Lifeguard Service (NLS) qualifications, as well as on-the-job training work experience. This program has a limited enrollment and students selecting this option will require a swim test to determine swimming proficiency. Students must be in grade 11 or 12, and at least 16 years of age, to apply for employment with CFB Borden - however they may take the NLS qualification at age 15. This course has a fee of $250 to cover the cost of certification and instruction. (Note: students must be 16 on or before the last day of classes of the semester, to apply for a lifeguarding position for the summer).

"Athletic Leadership" Course:

This course is offered as a grade 12 university/college (M-level) class.

This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active recreation and healthy leisure, and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to play, organize, and safely implement recreational events and other activities related to healthy, active living. Students will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others through mentoring and assisting them in making informed decisions that enhance their well-being. The course will prepare students for university programs in physical education, health, and kinesiology - and for college and university programs in recreation and leisure management, fitness and health promotion, and fitness leadership. Students must have completed any health and physical education course as a prerequisite.

"Introductory Kinesiology" (formerly "Exercise Science") Course:

This University-level course is offered in grade 12.

This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual's participation in physical activity. The course prepares students for university programs in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, and sports administration. Students must have completed any grade 11 university or college/university (M-level) preparation course in science - or any grade 11 or 12 open course in health and physical education - prior to enrolling in this class.
