French

 

High school is a great time for students to learn new languages. In addition, students can take additional International Languages courses through The Learning Centres. These credit courses are offered outside of the school day.

Grade 9 Open French Course:

Prerequisite: students with an Individual Education Plan and/or limited prior exposure

This course will develop students' oral communication, reading and writing skills in French. It will enhance their ability to understand and use French in conversations, presentations, short stories, letters and more! We will also learn about French cultures throughout the world. The content of this course is modified, along with the class size, for students with an Individual Education Plan and/or who have had limited exposure to French as a second language.

 

Grade 9 De-streamed French Course:

Prerequisite: core French in elementary school

This course is designed for all students who studied core French in elementary school. It enables students to increase their knowledge of the French language, further develop their language and literacy skills and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Exploring a variety of fun themes, students will develop and apply critical thinking skills in discussions, written projects, and interpretation of texts.

 

Grade 10 Academic French Course:

Prerequisite: grade 9 De-streamed French

This course is designed for all students who completed grade 9 de-streamed French. Building on the grammatical structures learned previously, students will continue to increase their knowledge of French language concepts, further develop their literacy skills, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Projects, discussions, and written work will revolve around a class novel study. Students will complete two independent studies for this course, including a French food project. There will be weekly spelling and common word comprehension tests.

 

Grade 11 University French Course:

Prerequisite: grade 10 Academic French

This course is designed for all students who completed grade 10 Academic French. Building on the grammatical structures learned previously, students will continue to increase their knowledge of French language concepts, further develop their literacy skills, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Projects, discussions and written work will revolve around a class novel study. Students will complete an independent study for this course about a topic of their choice.

 

Grade 12 University French Course:

Prerequisite: grade 11 University French

This course is designed for all students who completed grade 11 University French. Building on the grammatical structures learned previously, students will continue to increase their knowledge of French language concepts, further develop their literacy skills, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Projects, discussions and written work will revolve around a class novel study of The Little Prince. Students will complete an independent study for this course about a francophone person of their choice.
