


Grade 9 Open Dance (ATC1O):
No experience? No problem! Grade 9 Dance is all about getting moving, expressing yourself, and exploring what dance can be. You’ll learn how to create and perform using the elements of dance which plays with how we use body, space, energy, relationships, and time in our movement. Through fun group projects, workshop opportunities, and class performances, you’ll build confidence, teamwork skills, and stage presence. Througout the course, you’ll also explore basic anatomy, learning about the major bones that help you move safely and confidently. Units include: Exploring Movement, The Culture of Hip Hop, and Social Dances (Salsa, Disco, Line Dancing, and more!).
Grade 10 Open Dance (ATC2O):
Ready to take your dance journey up a level? In Grade 10 Dance, you’ll keep developing your technique and creativity while exploring new styles and ways to perform. You’ll learn how to create choreography, dance safely, and bring your artistic ideas to life, even in unexpected spaces! And this year, you’ll also dive deeper into anatomy and wellness, reviewing the major bones and learning basic first aid practices like R.I.C.E. to support injury prevention and recovery. Units include: Exploring Movement, Contemporary and Lyrical, Latin Dance, and Site-Specific Dance (moving in non-traditional spaces).
Grade 11 University/College Dance (ATC3M):
Prerequisite: Grade 9 or 10 Dance
In Grade 11 Dance, it’s all about artistry and personal expression. You’ll continue to grow your technical skills, ability to create innovative choreography, and explore dance as a form of storytelling and advocacy. With a variety of artistic challenges, dancers will push their creative limits, learn the power of teamwork, and celebrate diversity in dance. You’ll also learn about the major muscles of the body and how they work together to create strong, expressive movement. Units include: Exploring Modern Dance, Musical Theatre, Advocating for Dance Education, and a final project in a style of your choice.
Grade 12 University/College Dance (ATC4M1):
Prerequisite: Grade 11 Dance
Grade 12 Dance is your chance to take the spotlight as a leader and choreographer! You’ll refine your understanding of dance technique, choreographic forms, and anatomy, exploring how the muscles and basic body mechanics influence advanced movement. You’ll study work with the local elementary school to create dance education opportunities for young dancers and learn from professional artist in the industry. Units include: Exploring Modern Dance, The Evolution of Jazz and Fosse, Dance Leadership, and a self-choreographed piece in a style you choose.
The Grade 12 Dance course can be used for university and college applications!
