The Social Sciences Department provides optional courses exploring topics in psychology, sociology, anthropology, health and nutrition, child care, fashion, culture, equity and social justice. Our courses help students understand how individuals, groups and societies work, and develop interpersonal and intrapersonal understandings and skills. Social Science courses can help prepare students for personal and professional goals in relationships, mental and physical health services, law enforcement, criminology, child and youth services, education, and various other employment areas.

 

 Grade 9 Exploring Family Studies, Open (HIF1O)

In this course, you explore a little bit of everything: cooking, basic sewing skills, relationships, communication, problem solving, budgeting and future planning. Food labs typically occur each month.

 

 Grade 10 Food and Nutrition, Open (HFN2O)

In this course, you will learn to cook for yourself and your family. Learn about nutrition and apply it to what you cook in our classroom's four kitchens. Learn about current food issues. Food labs typically occur each week.

 

 Grade 10 Clothing, Open (HNL2O)

In this course, you will learn how to sew. No previous experience is necessary. Learn wardrobe planning and clothing selection skills, along with evaluating clothing and how to care for your clothes. Students will produce a number of sewing projects.

 

 Grade 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology, University and College (HSP3U and HSP3C)

In this course, you will learn about what makes us human. Learn about why people behave the way they do. Explore theories from a variety of perspectives, conduct social science research, and become familiar with historical and current thinking in the fields of psychology, sociology and anthropology.


 Grade 11 Food and Culture, Workplace (HFC3E) *NEW

In this course, you will learn the food and flavours from around the world. Learn about various cultures as you travel the world from your classroom seat, eating foods from a variety of countries as you go. Learn where food comes from and the influence of cultures on what we eat. Food labs typically occur every week.

  

 Grade 11 Raising Healthy Children, Open (HPC3O)

In this course, you will learn about child growth from pregnancy, birth and the first few years of life. Parenting styles and practices from around the world will also be explored. You will gain practical experience when you take home the RealCare Baby, which simulates the needs of a real infant.

  

 Grade 11 Understanding Fashion, Open (HNC3O)

In this course, you will learn how to sew. No previous experience is necessary, but it is helpful. Learn how culture, media, social and environmental factors influence fashion trends and consumer behaviour. Students will produce a number of sewing projects.
